Estate Records

The estate records in the collection are very complete and well-structured. They provide a vast amount of detail for the running of the Sutherland estates, even down to recording the daily weather conditions and detailed records of labour used to repair estate buildings.

As such they are a mine of information for family and local historians, as well as for people interested in social structure and economic history. Here are two examples of the detailed reports and surveys of properties and tenants drawn up by the local agents in the first half of the 19 th century on the North Staffordshire estate. One survey gives many descriptive and personal details of the tenants’ family, as well as the condition of their property. The second example comments on the quality of the tenant, the condition of his property and the agricultural practices used, as well as noting the dates of the tenancy in some cases.
